The most common type of massage at the spa, which combines various hands-on techniques including gliding, kneading, and cross-fiber friction. Swedish massage is performed by a trained and licensed massage therapist who lubricates the skin with massage oil to massage the whole body. It can be slow and gentle, or vigorous and bracing. These movements warm up the muscle tissue, releasing tension and gradually breaking up muscle “knots” or adhered tissues. If you want deeper work and can tolerate more pressure to get relief from chronic muscle pain, it’s better to book a deep tissue massage or trigger points therapy.
Trigger Points Therapy
Trigger points, also known as muscle knots, are involuntary contractions of a portion of muscle fiber. The pain, which according to the American Academy of Family Physicians affects about 10 percent of the American population, can be relieved many times via trigger point therapy, which consists of applying firm pressure to trigger points for a period of time until the pain in the muscle subsides. And in the shoulder blade area, there are three such pressure points that should be focused on. It’s important to drink a lot of water after a deep tissue massage to help flush lactic acid out of the tissues. It’s possible that you might feel some soreness the day after a deep tissue massage even if you DO drink water. This just means a lot of waste products were flushed out of the tissues. It should pass within a day or so.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a type of Swedish massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. You should always feel free to speak up if the pressure is too much for you. It’s important to drink a lot of water after a deep tissue massage to help flush lactic acid out of the tissues.
